Sister Wives star Janelle Brown is stepping into a new phase of her life.
Though she no longer believes in the Apostolic United Brethren Church, the mother of six wasn’t taking any chances. If there was any possibility she could “wake up in Heaven and still be married” to Kody Brown, she needed to pursue a release.
Following the explosive fight that ended their marriage in 2022, Janelle had already decided she was done with Kody. So when former sister wife Meri Brown challenged her to “just do it,” Janelle immediately emailed the the church requesting a “spiritual release.”
Janelle feels “free” of Kody Brown after their church granted spiritual “release”

In People’s sneak peek of the January 4 episode of Sister Wives, Janelle happily gets her spiritual release from Kody. “I have it,” she says, holding up the release paper. “That was easy … I am free, I am free, I am free!”
“I don’t know what I was worried about,” she continued. “They were all very kind. They granted me the release … So I’m glad I did this.”
Additionally, the church leaders said they’d notify Kody, so she wouldn’t have to deal with him any further.
“As I was leaving … I felt like a weight had lifted off me,” Janelle sighed. “So somewhere in the back of my mind, this must have been more important than I realized.”
Following their 29-year spiritual marriage, which included welcoming six children and losing one of them to suicide, Janelle has no regrets. Even though she was “married to him longer than I was single,” she’s at peace with her past.
“I love the family that we have,” she concluded. “And I would do it all again in order to get the family and the kids that we have. [But now] that chapter has ended.”
Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10/9c on TLC.
