Ne-Yo is setting the record straight on his romantic life, regarding his relationship with his three girlfriends. The singer previously revealed last year that he is practicing non-monogamy in a polycule with women named Arielle Hill, Moneii, and Cristina.
Ne-Yo, whose real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith, finalized his divorce from Crystal Renay Williams, his wife of seven years, in 2023. The musician has admitted that he was unfaithful in his marriage. His previous girlfriend, Monyetta Shaw, called the star out for demanding threesomes in their relationship. Since then, his romantic life has taken a surprising new direction, as he described in a new interview with Sherri Shepherd,
Ne-Yo says he is in “one relationship with three people”
During the interview, he described the divorce as “very public, very ugly,” Ne-Yo has turned against the monogamous lifestyle. “I made the decision that I was never going to tell another lie to a woman ever again in life,” he said. He added, “I own the things that I did in that marriage to mess it up. I own it completely, and I decided I didn’t want to be the reason that anybody ever felt like that ever again.”
He opted to propose a new arrangement for a woman he had begun seeing. After being unfaithful in past relationships, Ne-Yo wanted to practice non-mongamy consensually. “I went to one of [my girlfriends], who I’ve been with a little longer than the other ones,” he said. “‘I would love for you to meet these other women, and if we can figure out a way to do something together, cool. If not, that’s cool, too.’”
Luckily for Ne-Yo, “everybody chose to stick around.” The singer went on to explain that he is not in three different relationships with three women. Instead, he is in one relationship with three women.
When Sherri prompted him about whether his girlfriends could have their own set of multiple boyfriends, he gave an emphatic “no.”
“I don’t want to own you, I don’t want to possess you. I want to partner in this, and we can partner and work it out that way,” he explained. “But if the exclusivity is mine, it’s mine, damn it. You ain’t giving it to nobody. You gave it to me, it’s mine.”
It’s not the first time Ne-Yo’s life has drawn criticism. In 2023, he came under scrutiny for his comments on transgender kids, and later apologized.
