Upon hearing her great grandaughter’s name, Queen Elizabeth was very angry. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose the monarch’s nickname, Lilibet, for their daughter.
The Queen received the childhood nickname after struggling to pronounce Elizabeth as a child. She received the nickname from her grandfather, King George V, and it became a very personal lifelong moniker.

Hugo Vickers, royal historian and author of a new biography, Queen Elizabeth: A Personal History, criticized Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, according to Radar. He contends only family referred to Elizabeth as Lilibet.
According to Hugo, the Queen was “furious” when she found out Lilibet, born in 2021, had her nickname. On The Daily T podcast, Hugo said, “Oh, well, that was odious. To use the queen’s name that was used by her actual private family? No. That’s absolutely shocking.”
Because the Queen didn’t get a heads up or give her approval, she was very upset, Hugo alleges. “She said they did, but no, they didn’t. No, the queen was furious,” the author alleges.
When their daughter was born, there were contradictory reports about whether or not Harry received Elizabeth’s blessing to use Lilibet or if she thought he meant to use her given name, Elizabeth.
Harry and Meghan’s rep insisted they “100% got permission” for their daughter’s name and would only have chosen it with the Queen’s approval. However, a Buckingham Palace source said they never did get the green light.
In his 2024 biography, Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story, royal author Robert Jobson wrote that Elizabeth told her palace aides, “I don’t own the palaces, I don’t own the paintings, the only thing I own is my name. And now they’ve taken that.”
