Rap Icon Snoop Dogg Is Getting a ‘Rated R’ Biopic

Some stories are too loud, too influential, and too embedded in culture to be told with a filter. Especially when the life in question has soundtracked three decades of music and redefined what a hip-hop icon can become, it’s best to tell it raw. And that’s exactly what’s coming as a new R-rated movie telling Snoop Dogg’s life story is officially heading to the big screen.

Snoop Dogg reveals that he is getting a biopic

Snoop Dogg has confirmed that his journey from Long Beach roots as Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. to a global hip-hop icon is being adapted into an official biopic by Universal Pictures.

The rap legend opened the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon with a surprise. He performed Drop It Like It’s Hot and Gin and Juice before bringing actor Jonathan Daviss onstage. Snoop Dogg then briefly introduced the Outer Banks star who will play him in the upcoming film.

“After my brothers got to tell their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it’s my turn,” Snoop Dogg said. “My director, Craig Brewer, he just showed us how hard it is out here for a pimp from Hustle & Flow. And then last year, he got us all singing ‘Sweet Caroline,’” he continued.

“If we gonna do a Snoop Dogg movie, I gotta get gangster with it,” the rapper added, followed by an excerpt from Nuthin’ but a “G” Thang and a snippet of Deep Cover.

The Young, Wild & Free hitmaker further stated that his film will definitely carry an R rating. Hence, he advised younger fans to get their parents’ approval first.

The biopic’s director, Craig Brewer, has reworked the screenplay that was originally written by Joe Robert Cole. It is produced by Snoop Dogg, Brian Grazer, and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. It marks the first project under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios.

Universal Pictures previously released the Academy Award-nominated Straight Outta Compton in 2015. The film grossed over $200 million worldwide and featured LaKeith Stanfield as Snoop Dogg.
