Donald Trump made a joke about his marriage during a White House event on Tuesday. The lighthearted remark comes shortly after Jimmy Kimmel’s recent “expectant widow” joke. The latter drew backlash from the Trump administration.
Donald Trump jokes about his marriage amid Jimmy Kimmel’s joke
Donald Trump cracked a joke about his marriage to Melania Trump during a White House event on April 28, held to welcome King Charles and Queen Camilla. At one point, the President noted that his parents, Fred and Mary Trump, had been married for over six decades.
Referring to their long marriage, Donald turned to Melania and quipped, “That’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling, I’m sorry.” Trump added, “Just not going to work out that way. We’ll do well, but we’re not going to do that well.” The remark drew laughter from the British royals, while Melania flashed a smile.
Donald’s joke about his marriage comes just a few days after Jimmy Kimmel faced backlash from the Trump administration over his recent joke about the First Lady. During the April 23 episode of his show, Kimmel joked that Melania has a “glow like an expectant widow.”
The First Lady responded sharply to Kimmel’s remark, calling him a “coward” and urging ABC to “take a stand” against the comedian. “Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy — his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America,” she wrote on X.
Kimmel addressed the backlash on his Monday monologue, a couple of days following the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting scare. He said that his comment about Melania was “obviously a joke about their age difference.” Kimmel added, “It was not by any stretch a call to assassination, and they know that I’ve been very vocal for many years, speaking out against gun violence in particular.”
Kimmel did extend his sympathy to those present during the shooting incident on Saturday night. “I am sorry that you and the president and everyone in that room on Saturday went through that. I really am,” he said. “Just because no one got killed doesn’t mean it wasn’t traumatic and scary. And we should come together and be best.”
