Jimmy Kimmel isn’t holding back on the jokes against Donald Trump. The late-night host drew backlash last week for mocking the upcoming White House Correspondents’ Dinner. In his segment, which came before the shooting occurred at the gala, Jimmy called Trump’s wife, Melania, “an expectant widow.”
The POTUS was furious, launching an online tirade against the comedian, calling for his firing. Jimmy weighed in on that in his opening monologue Tuesday. “Only Donald Trump would demand I be fired for making a joke about his old age,” said Jimmy. Jimmy said the ‘widow joke’ was a reference to the age gap between the POTUS and Melania, with the former being 79.
Jimmy calls out Trump for making similar joke
If Trump’s words were intended to get Jimmy off his back, they failed miserably. During a recent visit from King Charles and Queen Camilla, the President noted that his father and mother had been married for over 60 years. He then turned to Melania and said, “That’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling.” That seemingly quip about his age didn’t go unnoticed by Jimmy, who said that only the POTUS would demand his firing and then “make a joke about his own old age.”
When Jimmy’s mock correspondents’ dinner speech came out, the President called it a “call to violence.” Melania took exception to it as well, saying it was “hateful and violent rhetoric.” According to Trump, many people were incensed by Jimmy’s jokes against his family before the dinner.
On Monday, Jimmy addressed the segment from last week amid some of the criticism he received. He says it was a “light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80 and she’s younger than I am.” The White House has slammed Jimmy for not apologizing. For their part, ABC are reportedly standing by Jimmy and taking no disciplinary action against him.
