Jonah Hill has opened up about why he chose to step away from Los Angeles and start a quieter life elsewhere. The actor shared that family played the biggest role in his decision, leading him to leave Hollywood behind for a slower pace. Hill said the move happened a few years ago after he became a father for the first time.
Jonah Hill shares the reason behind moving away from LA
During a recent live taping of the “SmartLess” podcast, Jonah Hill revealed that he now lives in a small town in San Diego with his wife, Olivia “Liv” Millar, and their children. Speaking on stage with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Hill gave a sweet shoutout to his wife before explaining why they left Los Angeles.
“So real quick, before we go any further, my wife is here. My best friend. Shout-out to my beautiful wife, Liv,” he said.
Hill explained that the family moved about three years ago after welcoming their first child. “So I live in a very small town in San Diego, and it’s amazing, and my neighbors are incredible people,” he shared. “When we had our first kid, we moved out there three years ago. I wanted to leave LA and raise a family outside of Los Angeles.” The “Superbad” star and his wife recently welcomed their second child, according to PEOPLE.
Even though he left LA, Hill still spoke warmly about growing up there in the 1990s. He said the city gave him a unique mix of freedom and access to entertainment. “LA was such a cool place to grow up in the ’90s because you could go skateboard downtown, or you could sneak into a movie premiere, or you could go sneak into a comedy club and see Chris Rock,” he said.
He added that there was a balance between Hollywood and youth culture, with punk music, skating, graffiti, and “all the naughty stuff” shaping his experience before the internet changed everything. Hill also reflected on how sudden fame after “Superbad” gave him too much responsibility too early, making him realize later that stepping back and focusing on family mattered more.
