Nancy Guthrie Case Isn’t Masked Suspect’s ‘First Rodeo,’ Expert Claims

Nearly three months after Nancy Guthrie vanished from her home in the Tucson area, the case still has no significant updates, with more questions than answers and no solid suspect. Authorities have reported that the 84-year-old mother of Today Show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie was taken from her home against her will.

As the FBI continues to seek information in the case, a forensic psychologist now suggests that the person caught on camera outside her home may not have been new to criminal behavior at all — and may not have been acting on his own.

Masked suspect in Nancy Guthrie case was likely ‘on the radar of law enforcement,’ per expert

In his interview with TMZ, Dr. Gary Brucato said that the masked suspect in Nancy Guthrie’s case did not strike him as someone acting for the first time. Focusing on the person visible on camera at Guthrie’s doorstep, not the possible planner behind the scenes,

Brucato said, “I don’t believe this is this person’s first rodeo with at least petty crime,” suggesting that the kidnapper likely “had some contact previously with law enforcement.”  Additionally, he proposed that the suspect may have been “at least on the radar of law enforcement.”

Brucato suggested that the case may involve more than one person, noting that he believes there were “at least two” people involved and described what he called a “waiter and chef idea.” In other words, he believes there was one more calculating figure behind the crime scene, and another person carrying out the job.

Moreover, the expert suggested that the person on camera may have been “a stooge or a goon or a hired person or a confederate” who was simply there to complete a task.

Notably, that is Brucato’s theory, not a finding that the investigators have officially announced. So far, the FBI and local authorities have said only that Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Catalina Foothills residence on the night of January 31, 2026, and that the case remains under investigation, with the country waiting for updates — and if Brucato’s reading is right, this might not be the first crime that the suspect had committed.
