Jimmy Kimmel has the support of one prominent Republican amid the backlash he’s facing. Ted Cruz doesn’t think the comedian should be punished for his countless remarks against the government, which some have deemed controversial.
Lately Jimmy has taken his fair share of shots at President Donald Trump and his family. There have been calls for the comedian to face consequences as a result. The Texas Senator says, “It is not the government’s job to censor speech.”
Senator Ted Cruz steps up to defend Jimmy Kimmel

There’s at least one Republican who appreciates Jimmy’s humor. In a recent interview with Punchbowl News, Ted said, “I do not believe the FCC should operate as the speech police.” Earlier this week, the Chairman of the FCC, Brendan Carr, faced criticism for reviewing ABC’s broadcast licenses for eight stations. That led many to believe the White House may be trying to influence him in this matter. Brendan has denied that claim.
For a long time, Jimmy has taken shots at the President, but some believe his segment last week went too far. Ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Jimmy held his own mock conference where he called First Lady Melania “an expectant widow.” The POTUS called for ABC to fire Jimmy while the White House called the comedian “a sh*t human being.” Melania, meanwhile, deemed him a “coward.”
The controversial segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live! came not long before a shooting ended the correspondents’ dinner in Washington, D.C. last Saturday. Despite the hate he’s received, some insiders say that ABC are standing by Jimmy.
Brendan has said that ABC needs to prove that they’re operating in the public interest. When asked about the Texas Senator’s comments about the FCC, Brendan said that he agreed they “shouldn’t be in the business of being the ‘speech police.’” ABC previously suspended Jimmy for controversial comments made in the aftermath of political activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
