Fans of Jimmy Kimmel’s show can rest a little easier. ABC is said to be standing behind the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! despite the recent backlash he’s drawn. Donald Trump took exception to the mockery made by the comedian on his show ahead of the upcoming White House Correspondents’ Dinner last Saturday.
In the scene, Jimmy is at a podium poking fun at Trump’s family and notably calling First Lady Melania an “expectant widow.” That sketch was shown last week, just days before a shooting at the big gala in Washington, D.C.
There are currently “no plans” to terminate Jimmy Kimmel from his job
Trump evidently doesn’t have as much sway on certain matters. An ABC source told Page Six that despite the criticisms, they are “sticking by” Jimmy and his show. The source adds that they “don’t plan to suspend him, fire him or cancel the show.” They are putting this matter behind them and moving forward with tapings, according to the insider.
News that Jimmy will keep his job likely won’t sit well with the POTUS. He blasted the comedian on Truth Social, calling for his immediate firing. The President’s wife took exception to Jimmy’s sketch as well, calling him a “coward.” Jimmy defended the widow joke, saying that he was merely making an obvious reference to the age gap between Melania and the President.
Jimmy’s gotten himself in trouble before on his show. He was temporarily suspended for comments made about Charlie Kirk shortly after his assassination. Many celebrities and late-night comedians came to Jimmy’s defense following the show’s being put on hiatus. Eventually, ABC decided to bring him back.
The likes of George Clooney felt Trump was taking things a little too seriously with Jimmy’s latest sketch, saying, “jokes are jokes.” Cole Thomas Allen was arrested in Saturday’s incident at the correspondent’s dinner.
