Donald Trump talks about his dance to Y.M.C.A.
Donald Trump visited the The Villages retirement community in Florida on Friday, May 1. Speaking to the crowd at the event, the president suggested that he helped Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” soar the charts. The popular song, which Trump has labelled “gay national anthem,” has been closely associated with him during his campaign.
Trump also revealed that First Lady Melania Trump is not a fan of his dance moves to “Y.M.C.A.” He shared, “She hates when I dance to what is sometimes referred to as the gay national anthem,” adding, “She hates it.”
The 70s Village People hit saw a resurgence in late 2024, topping the Billboard sales charts. In an X post at the time, Billboard announced, “Village People’s classic “Y.M.C.A.” spends a fifth week at No. 1 on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales, the most for any song by a group in 2024. The song originally reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 in 1979.”
During his Friday speech, Trump noted the renewed fame of “Y.M.C.A.” during his presidential campaign. However, he slightly exaggerated it, saying that the song “went to No. 1 for months.”
“We love that song,” Trump said, before sharing the First Lady’s dislike for his choreography to the tune. “But [Melania] goes, ‘Darling, please.’ You know, she’s a very elegant woman. She goes, ‘Darling, please don’t dance. It’s not presidential.’ I said, ‘It may not be presidential, but I’m leading by 20 points in the polls or something,’” the POTUS shared.
Later in the event, Trump showed off his dance moves to “Y.M.C.A.” The signature choreography features a double fist pump along with hip shakes. The president also included a pretend golf swing to top off the routine.
