Donald Trump Explains Ballroom Budget Amid $1B Demand

President Donald Trump has addressed the escalating budget of the planned White House ballroom, defending the project’s expanded scope after Senate Republicans linked a $1 billion security funding request to the construction.

Writing on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump acknowledged the ballroom budget has grown substantially from early projections but insisted the increase stems from deliberate design choices rather than financial mismanagement. He said the completed facility will be double its original planned size and built to significantly higher specifications.

“The original price was 200 Million Dollars, the double sized, highest quality completed project will be something less than 400 Million Dollars. It will be magnificent, safe, and secure,” Trump wrote. He placed responsibility for any confusion squarely on media coverage, adding, “This was a necessary change, it was done long ago, but the Fake News failed to report it, trying to make it look like there was a cost overrun. Actually, it is coming in ahead of schedule, and under budget!”

The statement came as the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced a broader immigration enforcement funding bill containing $1 billion earmarked for security upgrades connected to the ballroom project. The allocation has added to an already contentious debate over the use of public money for a facility initially promised to be funded entirely through private donations.

When Trump and White House officials announced the ballroom in 2025, early estimates placed construction costs at roughly $200 million. Officials said at the time that private fundraising would cover the full expense. As plans expanded, however, those figures rose, drawing criticism from transparency advocates and opposition lawmakers.

Republican supporters argue the expenditure is justified on national security grounds. They point specifically to the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in April, an incident they say exposed vulnerabilities in the current ways. Trump allies have increasingly characterised the ballroom not simply as an event space but as part of a wider effort to modernise and fortify the White House complex (via Newsweek).
