President Donald Trump is reportedly facing public backlash over his recent religious social media posts, with a new Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll showing overwhelming disapproval across party lines. The survey reveals that even his core supporters rejected the AI photo he shared that appeared to show him as Jesus Christ.
Americans are not in favor of Donald Trump’s religious post, as per new poll
87% of Americans viewed the AI post of Donald Trump negatively, according to the Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll. Among 2024 Trump voters, 80% disapproved, as did 79% of Republicans. Trump later deleted the photo following accusations of blasphemy from religious conservatives. He defended the post by saying he believed it showed him as similar to a doctor or Red Cross worker.
The survey comes amid ongoing tension between Trump and Pope Leo XIV, who has criticised U.S. actions on immigration and the war in Iran. Two-thirds of Americans responded positively to the Pope’s urging citizens to contact Congress in support of peace. By contrast, nearly 60% disapproved of Trump’s false claim that the Pope had said it was acceptable for Iran to possess nuclear weapons.
Furthermore, the poll suggests Trump’s standing with religious voting blocs has weakened. While 70% of White evangelical Protestants still approve of his overall performance, this represents a 10-point drop since February 2025. His approval among White Catholics fell to 49% from 63% over the same period. Among all Catholics, it stands at 38%, down 10 points.
Trump’s overall approval rating has declined from 45% in February 2025 to 37%. A separate post by the President during Iran negotiations, which stated “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” got a 76% negative reaction, including 53% who felt strongly negative.
Pope Leo XIV holds a positive image among 41% of Americans familiar with him, compared with 16% unfavourable. He remains popular with Catholic Republicans and Trump voters alike.
