Kanye West made a joke about his hit song while testifying in a copyright trial. For those unversed, Ye is being sued for using an uncleared sample in a demo version of his song “Hurricane.” However, the rapper made light of an entirely different song from his discography, while testifying in court.
Kanye West jokes about his song’s title at copyright trial
Kanye West injected some humor about his song’s title during his copyright trial. As per Billboard, Ye testified in federal court on Wednesday, May 5. He revealed that he followed the correct procedure to clear a sample for his 2021 album Donda. He also revealed he is “very generous” when it comes to giving credit to collaborators.
For those unversed, DJ Khalil, Sam Barsh, Dan Seeff, and Josh Mease have alleged that the rapper used an uncleared sample of their instrumental track “MSD PT2” in a “Hurricane” demo. Not only that, he played the demo version of “Hurricane” at his 2021 Donda album listening party.
“Hurricane” featured The Weeknd and Lil Baby and charted at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Not only that, Ye also bagged a Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance.
However, Ye maintained that the lawsuit was unfair. He asserted, “I pride myself on giving people what they deserve” in terms of credit and royalties. Moreover, he continued, “I feel like a lot of people try to take advantage of me. As I sit in this courtroom today, I just think people are trying to make more than they otherwise would because it’s me.”
Amid this serious talk, Ye injected some humor to lighten the atmosphere of the courtroom.
His attorney asked whether he won a Grammy for “Brothers in Paris.” The 48-year-old rapper replied, injecting his trademark dry sense of humor, “What’s the real name?” This prompted laughter in the courtroom as the rapper joined in the fun.
For those unversed, the original title of the collaborative track between Kanye West and Jay-Z is “N****s in Paris,” and the other name is generally used to avoid controversy or to avoid offending sentiments.
