King Charles casually dropped a personal detail during his visit to London’s Guy’s Cancer Centre this week. While speaking with a fellow cancer patient, the British monarch quietly disclosed one of the difficult side effects he experienced during his own treatment.
The 77-year-old royal, who announced his cancer diagnosis in 2024, appeared visibly empathetic as he connected with patients and medical staff during the hospital visit to mark the 300th anniversary of Guy’s Hospital.
King Charles shares vulnerable details during a visit to Guy’s Cancer Centre
During his tour of the cancer centre on Monday, Charles met Raymond Burgess, a patient currently undergoing chemotherapy. According to The Telegraph, Burgess mentioned that treatment had left him dealing with an unpleasant taste in his mouth.
“It’s an awful sort of metallic taste,” Charles reportedly responded. “It doesn’t exactly help with eating.”
The exchange marked one of the rare occasions the monarch has publicly spoken in detail about his own cancer treatment experience. Buckingham Palace has not disclosed the specific type of cancer Charles is battling, though the King has continued treatment into 2026.
Aside from meeting patients, Charles also spent time with doctors, researchers, and medical teams during the visit. He learned more about ongoing projects involving artificial intelligence and robotics in cancer care and surgical treatment.
The royal previously shared an update on his health journey during a pre-recorded message for Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer broadcast in December.
“Today, I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to doctors’ orders, my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year,” Charles said at the time.
The monarch also described the milestone as both “a personal blessing” and proof of the progress being made in cancer treatment and research.
Although Buckingham Palace has avoided using the word “remission,” royal aides previously confirmed King Charles had responded “exceptionally well” to treatment. Officials added that his recovery had moved into what they described as a “precautionary phase,” with doctors continuing to closely monitor his health moving forward.
