Alex Murdaugh’s conviction for murdering his wife and son has been overturned. The South Carolina Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Alex. It seems that the issues raised by his legal team in his appeal warranted a new trial. However, Alex will be awaiting his new trial in prison. He was sentenced to 40 years on federal charges and 27 years on state charges for various financial crimes.
Alex Murdaugh’s defense team won their appeal
PEOPLE reported that the court considered allegations about Rebecca “Becky” Hill, a former Colleton County Clerk of Court, troubling. In their appeal, Alex’s attorneys claimed that she may have improperly influenced the jurors. The legal team claimed that Rebecca’s alleged comments about Alex’s testimony supposedly interfered with his Sixth Amendment right. This right guarantees a fair and impartial trial.
However, the prosecutors’ response didn’t give any credence to this allegation. The prosecution claimed that there was no proof that Rebecca’s remarks were improper or influenced the jurors’ verdict.
Meanwhile, Alex, who hails from a prominent local family, was previously convicted of murdering his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and their son, Paul Murdaugh. The mother and son were shot to death at the family’s hunting property in June 2021.
While there were no witnesses to the crime, Paul sent a Snapchat video to a friend, putting his father at the scene just before the murder. In addition, around the time of the Murdaugh murders, Alex was asked to reveal his financial records. This was as a result of a boating accident, which claimed the life of one of Paul’s friends.
In March 2023, Alex was convicted after a six-week trial. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences. Meanwhile, Alex continues to profess his innocence in this heinous double crime.
