Majority of Americans Disapprove of Donald Trump’s Handle on Economy — Poll

Public confidence in Donald Trump’s economic leadership has cratered, with a striking 70% of Americans now saying they disapprove of his handling of the economy. A new CNN poll paints a picture of financial anxiety sweeping across the country, fueled by stubborn inflation, global instability, and a growing belief that the American Dream is slipping out of reach.

Donald Trump scores 70% disapproval rating over economy

The latest survey reveals just how far the president’s economic standing has fallen. Only 30% of respondents approve of Donald Trump’s management of the economy. This 70% disapproval rating is uncharted territory for Trump, whose economic numbers never crossed the 50% disapproval threshold during his first term. In his second term, the average disapproval ranking started at 56% and has climbed steadily since.

These numbers align with other recent polling, confirming that the administration’s fiscal policies are growing increasingly unpopular. After all, the pessimistic mood extends beyond Trump’s performance and into the future. Nearly as many respondents, 69%, say they believe a recession is likely next year, while just 31% disagree.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the public has held a negative economic outlook, a streak that has worsened from the time when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Despite some fluctuations, morale remained poor throughout former President Biden’s tenure and continues to decline under Trump. Americans describe their financial future using words like “uncertainty” and “stress,” with 54% and 45% of respondents choosing those terms, respectively. Only 15% say they feel “pride” about what lies ahead financially. The cost of living also remains the dominant economic concern for most adults.

The survey uncovers a profound erosion of faith in economic mobility. Three-quarters of respondents said the economy unfairly favours the powerful subjects. A similar proportion believes it is harder to get ahead now than a generation ago, and most expect conditions to worsen for the next generation.
