Donald Trump has reportedly left a written letter for JD Vance outlining what the vice president should do if he gets assassinated, according to a White House official. The disclosure, made by counterterrorism adviser Sebastian Gorka, sheds light on how the administration has codified its response plans for a worst-case scenario.

Speaking on The New York Post’s Pod Force One podcast, Gorka revealed that the president has placed a letter inside the Resolute Desk addressed to his vice president, JD Vance. “There is a letter in the drawer in the resolute desk that is addressed to the vice president, should something happen to him,” Gorka said. He added that this kind of preparation sends a clear sign to adversaries. “So that is the language of power that nations like China, Iran, and Russia understand.”
The topic came up when Gorka was asked whether he feared an assassination attempt during Donald Trump’s trip to China. He brushed aside the immediate concern but confirmed that detailed procedures do exist. “We have protocols, trust me. Not ones I can discuss, but we have protocols,” he said.
Gorka’s comments echo something Trump himself said publicly back in January, right before he ordered strikes on Iran. The president told reporters he had given Vance explicit directions if anything happened to him. “If anything ever happens, we’re going to blow the whole — the whole country is going to get blown up,” Trump said at the time. “I have very firm instructions — anything happens, they’re going to wipe them off the face of this earth.”
Moreover, the revelation comes during a period when Donald Trump has been unusually open about his own mortality. He recently made the strange admission that he “probably should make it” to heaven after previously doubting it.
