Donald Trump just went after a Republican staffer in his latest Truth Social post. The president demanded the firing of a Mitch McConnell aide over a routine moment during a Senate hearing.
Donald Trump wants Mitch McConnell to fire staffer
Donald Trump called for the firing of a GOP staffer who he claims made Mitch McConnell “look foolish” during a Senate hearing. Trump posted on Truth Social in the early hours of Wednesday, May 13, targeting Republican staffer Robert Karem.
Karem approached McConnell during a Senate hearing about the war in Iran to inform him that other senators had questions. Trump accused the staffer of disrupting the hearing’s conclusion and called the move “grandstanding.” “The guy that came up to Mitch McConnell today when McConnell thought the hearing was over, and started speaking in his ear for Mitch to belatedly introduce some other people, all Democrats and, by doing so, made Mitch look foolish and completely out of it, should be immediately fired!” Trump wrote.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Dan Caine testified during the hearing about Iran and Pentagon spending. McConnell had begun wrapping up proceedings when Karem intervened. Karem informed McConnell that Tammy Baldwin, Jeanne Shaheen, and John Kennedy still had questions to ask Pentagon officials. McConnell responded by acknowledging the remaining senators and asked Senator Murkowski to take over the proceedings.
Trump also attached Karem’s photo to the post, a move widely considered online as targeting and intimidation. He alleged that Karem holds excessive Democratic support and influences McConnell’s opposition to ending the filibuster. “He is probably the reason why Mitch McConnell is stupidly opposed to terminating the Filibuster, and refuses to help with a 97% issue, THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,” Trump wrote.
Trump and McConnell have clashed on several issues during the second administration. McConnell voted against Trump’s defense secretary pick Hegseth in January 2025 and condemned the president’s tariff policies in an op-ed. Trump concluded his post with “FIRE THE BUM!”
