Elon Musk goes viral for taking selfie during state dinner
Elon Musk has joined Donald Trump’s U.S. delegation to his recent three-day visit to China. During a state dinner hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, May 14, the Tesla CEO was spotted taking a selfie with Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi. A video that quickly went viral on social media also captured Musk rolling his eyes and pulling strange faces.
It remains unclear why Musk accompanied Trump on the state visit to China. The president had previously stated that he is in China for an “incredible gathering of the world’s greatest businessmen/women” and meeting with President Xi Jinping.
However, this is Musk’s first visit to the country. The tech mogul had previously travelled to China in 2023 to visit Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai. During the trip, he had praised China’s advancements and innovations in technology.
Besides Musk, other tech giants who have joined Trump for his China visit include Tim Cook of Apple, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Larry Fink of BlackRock, along with several executives from companies like Meta, Boeing, JP Morgan, and more.
According to China’s state-backed newspaper Xinhua, President Xi Jinping is welcoming Trump and his delegation of tech giants, stating that his country’s “door will only open wider” for U.S. businesses. The report stated, “Xi said China welcomes the United States to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation with China, and expressed belief that U.S. companies will enjoy even broader prospects in China.”
Trump also spoke about his visit in a May 12 Truth Social post. “I will be asking President Xi, a Leader of extraordinary distinction, to ‘open up’ China so that these brilliant people can work their magic, and help bring the People’s Republic to an even higher level,” the president said.
