Peter Jackson Finally Explains Why Ryan Gosling Was Recast for Big Movie

LOTR director Peter Jackson addresses why Ryan Gosling was recast for “The Lovely Bones“. Gosling was originally cast as the father of Saoirse Ronan’s lead character. However, the actor told The Hollywood Reporter that he was fired from the movie. This happened after the actor had gained 60 additional pounds without Jackson’s consent. Now, Jackson has weighed in on the matter and explained why “The Notebook” star was recast.

Director Peter Jackson breaks silence on Ryan Gosling getting recast in The Lovely Bones

Director Peter Jackson finally explained the lore behind Ryan Gosling getting recast in The Lovely Bones. Gosling had revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he and Jackson had different perspectives on the character. The “Project Hail Mary” star said he “got it wrong” by gaining 60 pounds for the role. The role eventually went to Mark Wahlberg.

During a conversation with Entertainment Weekly at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, Jackson finally broke his silence on the matter. The LOTR director confessed it was his fault, not Gosling.

Jackson explained, “I won’t talk about any particular examples of actors because it’s a personal, private thing, and it’s not their fault.” He further elaborated that whenever they recast an actor, it was “actually our fault because we didn’t get the casting right and cast the wrong person for a role.”

The filmmaker added, “So, I’m not going to talk about individuals, but you just realize that what you were imagining isn’t really quite happening, which means that we got it wrong, and so we take full responsibility.”

The 64-year-old lavished praise on the “Blue Valentine” star and called him a “fantastic actor.” Furthermore, Jackson said, “Films are a chemistry both on camera and behind the camera. They’re chemistry in terms of what the actor conveys to the audience of the film.”

Jackson continued, “It’s just a complicated sort of amalgam of communication of how somebody gels into a group of people, into a story, into a character. It’s complicated, and usually you try very hard when you’re planning the film and casting it to get that gel kind of right, but occasionally we make our own mistakes.”
