Meghan Markle is, once again, sparking backlash after a selfie surfaced of her with far-right Finnish politician Willie Rydman. Rydman took the photo during her trip to Geneva, Switzerland. He serves as the Minister of Social Affairs and Health for the Nordic country, and has been accused of sexual harassment and racism.
It’s possible the Duchess of Sussex had no idea who Wille Rydman was
To be fair, so many politicians ask for photos with the Duchess of Sussex. It’s very possible that she had no idea who Rydman was when she posed with him. Backlash is quite common for Meghan. This is just the latest.
Meghan went to Geneva to speak at the inauguration ceremony for The Lost Screen Memorial. She spoke about the various ways social media can harm children. Ironically, Rydman is accused of harassing young women and girls.
The politician himself posted the photo on his social media. “A dinner with Meghan,” he commented alongside the snapshot. The two are smiling, and Meghan is in a black blazer with her hair in a neat, tight bun and a simple gold chain.
The backlash was biting. Fans commented on the post about Rydman’s questionable past. One person asked whether Meghan knew that the far-right politician had allegedly sent vile, racist text messages and had faced accusations of harassing and grooming young women. Another added that the photo was not a good look for her after a speech about the safety of young folk.
However, again, it’s important to note that Rydman posted the photo. Meghan could very well have been unaware of his past.
In response to the picture, Meghan’s spokesperson told The Royalist Substack that they aren’t able to vet the background of every single person who asks for a selfie.
