President Donald Trump may miss his son Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas this weekend. He cited the Iran war as the reason his attendance remains uncertain. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Thursday, the president acknowledged the difficult position the timing has created.
Donald Trump jokes about son’s wedding plans
Donald Trump Jr. is set to marry Bettina Anderson on Saturday in what the president described as an intimate ceremony. Yet with global attention fixed on Middle East tensions, Donald Trump indicated his presence at the event cannot be guaranteed.
“He’d like me to go,” Trump said of his eldest son. “But it’s going to be just a small, little private affair, and I’m going to try and make it. I’m in the midst — I said, you know, this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things. That’s one I can’t win on.”
The president then gave a blunt assessment of how the media would treat his decision either way. “If I do attend, I get killed. If I don’t attend, I get killed, by the fake news, of course,” he said. Trump did extend good wishes to the couple, mentioning his familiarity with Anderson. “He’s got a very — a person who I’ve known for a long time, and hopefully they are going to have a great marriage,” he said.
The logistical signs suggest Trump will not be making the trip. Page Six first reported Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding location as the Bahamas, while the White House schedule released after Trump’s Thursday remarks placed him in Bedminster, New Jersey, on the same day.
However, critics have already pointed out that the Iran war did not disrupt the president’s leisure time earlier. He previously attended an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event in Miami, a PGA tour championship at his Doral golf club, and even went for multiple rounds of golf.
Anderson and Donald Trump Jr. announced their engagement at a White House holiday party in December.
