Jake Tapper Confronts Spencer Pratt Over 9/11 Conspiracy Theory

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt had a curious theory about the September 11 terrorist attacks. In a 2009 appearance on Alex Jones‘ Infowars, Spencer said he believed the attacks on New York City and the Pentagon were “100 percent” an inside job.

During a recent appearance on Jake Tapper’s The Lead, the CNN host played archival audio of the attacks for Spencer. Immediately following, he asked, “Do you still think that?”

The former reality TV star, who has been endorsed by Donald Trump, seemed to squirm in his seat.

Spencer then tried to pivot by comparing 9/11 to surviving the Pacific Palisades fire in January 2025. He claimed his perspective changed when he and his family lived through what he called “city and state negligence.”

“I was young and naive to understanding how there are people that will fail citizens across the board,” he said of his 9/11 theory. “I haven’t watched any of those things in 20 years … But now [I see] with my fresh eyes of surviving the city’s negligence that burned 12 people in my neighborhood alive, [as well as] 7,000 structures … Now with new, fresh eyes, I’m sure I would look at that a lot different.”

“[The city of Los Angeles] didn’t burn my house down on purpose,” he added. “They just failed.” Reportedly, Spencer didn’t have fire insurance on his $3.8 million Pacific Palisades home.

Though he claims to have “20 years of regret” over his past comments, he doesn’t believe the old clips have anything to do with his run for mayor.

Previously, Spencer earned the title of the “villain” on MTV’s mid-2000s reality show The Hills. His controlling behavior toward his then-girlfriend/now-wife Heidi Montag was the root of his terrible reputation.

In addition, Spencer’s image wasn’t helped when prior to the December 2012 Mayan Apocalypse, he and his wife liquidated all their assets. Thinking the world was going to end, the Pratts sold all their possessions, including an estimated $1 million crystal collection.
