The legal team of Tyler Robinson, the primary suspect who killed conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, has asked Judge Tony Graf to restrict access to the preliminary hearing from July 6 to July 10. This is the period during which prosecutors must prove that sufficient evidence exists to move the case to trial.
Tyler Robinson aims to seal evidence in the Charlie Kirk murder case that could potentially “poison” jury pool members
The defense team, which filed their motion on May 31, is seeking to keep dozens of exhibits under seal, citing concerns that media attention could affect Robinson’s right to a fair trial. Robinson’s attorney, Staci Visser, said, as per NewsNation, “That’s the only way we see that we can protect our client’s right to a fair trial and avoid evidence getting out that potentially is going to be challenged in the future and may not ultimately be used or admissible at trial.”
She further added, “We believe the only way to really prevent that is to control what’s coming out of this courtroom, so that is why we’re asking to close portions of the preliminary hearing, if we can narrow it down.”
One of the key pieces of evidence is an alleged note Robinson reportedly left for a romantic partner, reports RadarOnline. As per the prosecutors, the message stated, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.”
According to the Washington Examiner, Robinson’s attorney accused Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray and Deputy Utah County Attorney Chris Ballard of improperly communicating about the case with several media outlets, including TMZ, USA Today, Fox News, and PolitiFact.
Robinson faces several charges, including aggravated murder, in connection with Kirk’s death on September 10. Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty if Robinson is convicted. He has not yet entered a plea in the case.
