Antonella Barba is back in the news for the wrong reasons. The former American Idol contestant who shot to fame in Season 6 of the program allegedly violated the terms of her parole by smoking marijuana.
Fortunately, officers aren’t punishing her as severely as they could, seeing as she stepped forward and admitted what she did.
Antonella is currently on supervised release after her conviction for drug trafficking.
Court documents allege the singer broke the terms of her release after leaving prison
Confessing your wrongdoing can sometimes lead to leniency. That appears to be the case with Antonella. TMZ reports that officers appeared to be suspicious before a scheduled visit and urine screening for her on May 5, when she seemed to be stalling.
Ultimately, Antonella couldn’t keep the secret, spilling the beans that she had smoked marijuana. As part of her probation, she is not allowed to use controlled substances.
Despite the violation, she will not incur any additional punishment. Instead, they are addressing her underlying stressors with her existing mental health treatment program, including counselling, and alternative coping strategies.
Probation officers wrote that her marijuana use was “situational in nature” and did not reflect a “disregard for the conditions.” As such, they aren’t taking any formal action against her, but they’ll continue to monitor her. A judge signed off on that recommendation.
That should come as a relief to Antonella, who has seen her share of time behind bars. She was arrested in 2018 and found guilty of possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl the next year. She was released in 2021 but has been under supervision ever since. Antonella previously violated the terms of her release last year, having been arrested for domestic violence.
This story comes a few months after another one of American Idol’s past contestants was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife. Caleb Flynn appeared on the show in 2013. Antonella’s last released songs were in 2015.
