John Bessler, the husband of Senator Amy Klobuchar, reportedly accompanied them at the time. Biden claims Bessler spent much of the ride trying to keep the conversation flowing between the two first ladies.
In the memoir, Biden suggests the tension did not come out of nowhere. She writes that she and Trump never developed a meaningful relationship despite years in overlapping public roles. According to Biden, Trump declined a first-lady tradition involving tea during the 2021 transition and later turned down an invitation she extended in 2024. Their interactions, she claims, were largely limited to brief encounters at high-profile public events.
As the inauguration-day ride got underway, Biden said Bessler attempted to bridge the gap with a steady stream of questions. She recalls asking Trump about her father after the recent loss of her mother. As per Biden’s account, Trump said her father was doing well, while noting that “it’s only been a year.”
The conversation reportedly shifted to lighter topics, including pets and family life. Biden claims Trump revealed that the family never owned a dog because her son, Barron Trump, was not interested in having one. When asked about Barron, Trump allegedly spoke briefly about his college experience and daily routine. Still, Biden writes that many of the answers were short and that Trump often redirected the discussion toward the weather.
