Auteur Martin Scorsese weighed in on the use of AI in filmmaking. Scorsese is working as an advisor to the AI company Black Forest Labs, and the filmmaker, in collaboration with the company, is experimenting with their AI technology to generate storyboards. He also urged Hollywood and audiences to view AI with an open mindset and consider its positive qualities.
Martin Scorsese backs use of AI in filmmaking
Martin Scorsese endorsed the use of AI in filmmaking. The 83-year-old filmmaker backed Black Forest Labs. For those unversed, it is an AI company specializing in “visual intelligence” using its FLUX image generator. The company announced on June 2 that Scorsese would be assisting them as an advisor in shaping visual intelligence on their website.
“The Wolf of Wall Street” director explained his decision to back AI in a new statement. He revealed that he planned on using AI tools in his storyboarding process during preproduction (via Entertainment Weekly).
Scorsese explained that for 70 years, he has been creating his own storyboards. He confessed that it is a challenge to translate one’s vision onto paper and explain it to cast and crew during the production process. The veteran filmmaker reasoned, “I’m interested in the intersection of technology and storytelling, and seeing how that can push the bounds of creativity to create deeper and richer experiences for audiences.”
The director explained that he has accepted and embraced new technology throughout his career. Scorsese stated, “Remember, cinema is a young medium, only around 125 years old, so we have to be open to how it can evolve.” Notably, the auteur explained how he used 3D for “Hugo” and de-aging technology for “The Irishman”.
Scorsese shared that now, with AI tools, he can explain his vision better. He is also able to communicate more effectively with his creative team. The “Taxi Driver” director confessed that “the ability to visualize and immediately share the storyboard was creatively freeing.” He added that time costs money, and these AI tools allowed them to function faster without sacrificing quality or craft.
Scorsese is filming his next film, a cinematic adaptation of Peter Cameron’s gothic mystery novel “What Happens at Night”. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
