Hannah Berner Talks Her ‘Star Power’ After Being Fired From Summer House

Sometimes getting fired can be a blessing in disguise. It turned out that way for Hannah Berner after she was fired from Summer House in 2021, following three seasons on the show.

A regular on Summer House Seasons 3 through 5, Hannah was also featured on Bravo’s all-female late-night talk show Chat Room. At the time, she claimed leaving was her decision, in order to focus on “new career ventures.”

On the June 8 episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Hannah shared that she was “fired from [Summer House] and [Bravo’s Chat Room].” But getting fired opened the door to her full-time career as a standup comic.

The stand-up comic was told she was “too much for reality TV”

“It was a matter of, ‘You need everyone to be friends,’” she told Dax. “Not everyone was getting along … I was gonna be the one kiboshed. I just say, getting fired [equals] star power … Getting fired, they were like, ‘You’re too much for reality TV.’”

While admitting she “learned so much” from her Bravo days, getting the pink slip lit a fire under her to pursue her comedy career.

“I remember thinking, ‘Now I need to get a Netflix special,’” the former junior tennis player said. “I got such a chip on my shoulder. ‘Cause you have to be crazy to [do] standup every night. You have to have some kind of addict mentality.”

“Also, no one in reality TV gets a Netflix special. So I was like, ‘Let’s f*cking go,’” she added. “I never put any of my energy towards hurting anyone. I literally was like, ‘And now we’re moving on.’”

These days, with two Netflix comedy specials under her belt, Hannah also co-hosts the Giggly Squad podcast alongside fellow Summer House alum Paige DeSorbo.

Summer House Season 10 Reunion Part 3 concludes on Bravo June 9. All episodes are now streaming on Peacock.
