Idris Elba dismissed 007 rumors, stating that James Bond should not become a “woke” character. The Luther star refuses to reshape the role around modern political themes. His statement comes as the Bond franchise is navigating a transition period following Daniel Craig’s 2021 exit.
Idris Elba shares his take on James Bond rumors
Idris Elba has broken his silence on the James Bond rumors, sharing a candid perspective on what the 007 role should represent.
The Hijack actor has been a fan favorite for the 007 mantle. But in a new British GQ cover story, Elba says the speculation was “never legit.”
“I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing,” he explained to British GQ. “James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”
He further argued that 007 shouldn’t be forced into a new mold. “Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke. I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond,” he added.
Speculation over the next James Bond is ramping up now that casting is officially underway. Amazon MGM Studios, which took full creative control of the franchise last year, has tapped veteran casting director Nina Gold, known for “Game of Thrones” and “The Crown”, to lead the search.
Denis Villeneuve, of “Dune” fame, will direct the upcoming Bond film, and, according to Variety, he and the studio are eyeing a younger actor for the role. Tom Francis has already read for the part. The British star made waves winning an Olivier Award alongside Nicole Scherzinger in the stage production of Sunset Boulevard. Other names still circulating include Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Callum Turner.
