Jacob Elordi may look like fan-casting gold. But one Bond veteran is not buying the hype. The Euphoria star has repeatedly been pulled into the next 007 conversation. However, former James Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams has now made it clear that she does not see Jacob Elordi as the right fit.
Veteran 007 gatekeeper Debbie McWilliams shuts down rumors of the Euphoria star taking over the iconic franchise
According to The Independent, McWilliams had a blunt response to the current names being floated for the role. “I don’t want to see any of them as James Bond,” she said, referring to rumored contenders including Elordi, Callum Turner, and Harris Dickinson. That is a serious opinion in the James Bond casting 2026 conversation. McWilliams worked on the 007 franchise for four decades and helped cast Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.
Her issue does not appear to be Elordi’s talent. It is his fame. McWilliams said it is “absolutely essential” that Bond remains a “total enigma.” For her, the actor playing james bond 007 should feel mysterious enough to convince audiences he could live as a spy. “I don’t want to see any of them as Bond because we now know so much about them,” she said. She added that audiences do not need to know where Bond shops, who his parents are, or where he lives.
That argument makes Elordi’s case tricky. He has become a major young Hollywood name thanks to Euphoria, Saltburn, and his red-carpet presence. For fans, that visibility may make him exciting. For McWilliams, it may make him too familiar. Entertainment Weekly reported that the search for the new james bond is officially underway, with Nina Gold leading casting. Denis Villeneuve is directing the next film, while Steven Knight is writing the script.
So, Elordi has not been officially ruled out by the studio. Still, one of the franchise’s most experienced casting voices has delivered a very Bond-style message: the next 007 may need to appear from the shadows.
