Oscar-Winner Sean Penn Faces Backlash for Comments About Selfies and Holocaust Reference

In an interview for The Guardian, Oscar winner Sean Penn expressed his absolute dislike of taking or participating in selfies. The actor said that he would say no to everyone wanting a selfie, including a “Holocaust grandmother and her six-year-old paraplegic.”

Penn asserted that “People should not do selfies ever with anyone. It’s bad for you,” adding that selfies were “soul suckers”.

However, the actor’s comments about Holocaust survivors and the specially enabled drew the audience to social media, and they had a lot to say. According to Page Six, a fan commented, “Agree on the selfie thing though not to the extent Penn put on it. Holocaust grandmother seems a bit much, but it does seem like a degrading exercise for the seeker.” Another netizen had similar things to say: “Or, just be thankful you’ve got one of the most privileged jobs on the planet and spend two seconds being nice to the people that put you there … remember? The fans?”

Not all comments were disparaging, with one agreeing to Sean’s dislike of selfies, saying, “Penn is a pretentious c**t for a dozen or more reasons, but I can’t say I disagree with his take on selfies.” Another quipped, “Just because you are a Holocaust survivor, that doesn’t give you right to bother others.”

Penn said he had given up attending award shows after numerous people asked him for selfies at the Golden Globes a few months earlier. In fact, the veteran actor was not present to take his third Oscar for his role in “One Battle After Another”.

This is not the first time that Penn has been embroiled in a controversy. He has repeatedly angered his peers and audience with unfavorable political views, clashes with journalists, and blunt public statements.
