Mayor Zohan Mamdani announces victory parade for Knicks after championship win
A press release announced that the NYC mayor will host a ticker-tape parade on June 18. Moreover, a championship celebration and Key to the City ceremony on the City Hall Plaza will take place immediately after.
As per the NBA’s official statement, City Hall and municipal buildings across the city will be illuminated in the Knicks’ colors: blue and orange. The David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building and Brooklyn Borough Hall are some of the buildings that will participate.
“For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment. Through near misses, heartbreak, and a hope that every year could be our year, this city never stopped believing in the Knicks. And this team fulfilled that hope with grit, resilience, and heart — just like the five boroughs itself,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The 34-year-old politician added, “New Yorkers have cheered for our team from packed living rooms in the Bronx to watch parties in Brooklyn, from bars in Queens to Staten Island to Manhattan, and Madison Square Garden itself. Now it’s time for our city to celebrate together. Bing bong.”
The ticker tape parade will start at 10 AM. It will begin near Battery Park and travel north along Broadway through the Canyon of Heroes before concluding at City Hall.
During a chat with ABC 7, Mayor Mamdani also said, “As a fan, I haven’t wanted to jinx it, but as the mayor, we’ve been preparing for all these logistics.” He further added that it was “beautiful” that this unity in the city is coming from “a moment of joy.”
On June 13, the New York Knicks won the NBA championship final against the San Antonio Spurs, marking a historic moment in the team’s history.
