Kate Middleton Pays Subtle Tribute to Princess Diana at Trooping the Colour

Kate Middleton offered a sweet homage to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. On Saturday, Middleton attended the birthday parade of King Charles III, Trooping the Colour. For the event, she donned a stunning outfit similar to the one Diana wore in 1987.

Princess Kate’s Trooping the Colour 2026 outfit has a Diana connection

Kate Middleton tried to recreate Princess Diana’s 1987 design for the Trooping the Colour event. The Princess of Wales wore a baby-blue coat with matching buttons and white trim, designed by Catherine Walker. She paired this with a matching hat by Philip Treacy featuring side ribbon knots and floral-shaped earrings. Diana also wore a blue floral outfit with similar trimmings in 1987 for an Easter service event. She added this with a white undershirt, matching gloves, and heels.

Middleton’s designer, Walker, designed for Diana in 90s. For the unaware, Princess Kate has paid tribute to Diana many times, from clothing choices to jewelry designs. Moreover, she prefers to repeat the late royal’s look. Bethan Holt, fashion director at The Telegraph, discussed how Middleton pays homage to her late mother-in-law. “I think we have seen lots of examples where the reference is very intentional, and I think that Kate uses fashion to pay tribute to Diana in a very positive way,” she told PEOPLE.

Holt continued, “I think that William and Kate, between them, might have decided that actually on some occasions it’s a really nice thing for Kate to reference the fact that Diana is still a fashion muse today and to do that through her own clothes.” She further explained, “What’s really key about these times when Kate references Diana, it’s not like a costume. She brings it right up to date so she makes it look relevant for now.” Holt also stated that the Princess of Wales “makes it her own without looking like she’s playing ‘dress up as Diana.”
