Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough has criticised U.S. President Donald Trump over the U.S.–Iran peace deal. The 63-year-old anchor addressed the leaked terms of Trump’s reported deal and shared his perspective.
MS NOW host says Trump’s alleged leaked terms undermine U.S. strategy
On June 16, Bloomberg reportedly published what it claims is the full 14-point U.S.–Iran MoU, set to be signed on June 19 in Switzerland to end the war that began in late February. Details of this leaked MoU have circulated across media outlets. However, Trump said the draft is not final.
During the show on June 17, the MS NOW anchor said, as quoted by The Wrap, “It is my hope, not for the sake of Donald Trump, not for the sake of Republicans or Democrats, not for the sake of any political party, but for the sake of the United States of America and all of our allies in the region, that this draft MoU that Bloomberg has gotten a hold of is nowhere near the final MoU. Because this would be devastating.”
Scarborough said that the deal would “create in Iran a behemoth in that region and allow them to sell oil in a way they’ve never been able to sell oil, to make revenue a way they’ve never been able to get revenue.” He added that after reviewing the draft, “it looks like we lost the war.”
He said he hoped the MoU would face strong opposition within President Donald Trump’s own party, saying, “It is my great hope that over the next several days, the sensitivities that [Vice President] JD Vance was talking about are the sensitivities of a Republican Senate that would be in open rebellion against something like this — and all of our allies in the region and probably across the world. This MoU would create in Iran a behemoth stronger than it’s ever been.”
On the other hand, co-host Willie Geist said the main U.S. gain in the leaked MoU was the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which was already open before February 28. The agreement reportedly requires Iran to ensure commercial shipping can pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Yahoo News. As per Reuters, the U.S.–Iran deal is expected to launch negotiations for a final settlement aimed at ending the war, which left over 7,000 dead, mostly in Iran and Lebanon.
