Donald Trump Says the Iran Deal Was ‘Not Easy’

US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi signed a historic peace deal on Thursday. The ceremony took place at the Palace of Versailles, bringing months of conflict to an end. Before putting pen to paper, Trump paused and addressed the gathered leaders with characteristic frankness.

“This was not easy – that I can tell you,” Trump said, holding a pen in his hand as French President Emmanuel Macron and other officials watched closely. The signing happened during dinner at the iconic French palace, where leaders had gathered following the G7 summit.

Trump signed the memorandum of understanding and immediately held it up for the cameras. Video from the room showed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio standing behind the president as applause filled the hall. Moments later, while walking out of the palace, Trump told reporters, “Just signed it.”

The 14-point peace deal with Iran ensures an immediate ceasefire across all fronts, including Lebanon. It forces the full restoration of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz without transit charges and lifts the US blockade on Iranian ports. The deal also removes sweeping US sanctions, releases frozen Iranian assets, and establishes a $300 billion investment fund for Iran’s post-war reconstruction.

Crucially, the memorandum extends the April ceasefire by 60 more days, giving negotiators time to craft a permanent settlement. Iran reaffirmed its longstanding commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and agreed to down-blend its enriched uranium stockpile on-site under IAEA supervision.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed the signing, stating it was now “time to test” the deal’s implementation. Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, told state-run Press TV that Tehran negotiated from a “position of strength,” pointing to battlefield victories as leverage (via News18).

The US has not publicly released the full contents of the agreement.
