Michelle Obama and George W. Bush reunited at the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center. There, they recreated their viral moment from 2018. The moment in question occurred when Bush and Obama were seated next to each other at the funeral of Sen. John McCain. At the time, Bush handed the former first lady an Altoid, a gesture that was widely discussed among many.
George W. Bush and Michelle Obama reunite in Chicago
Bush gifted Michelle Obama Altoids during their reunion at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on Thursday, June 18. The gift doesn’t come as a surprise, given Bush’s daughter, Jenna, already revealed earlier on TODAY what her dad was planning to gift the former first lady for the center opening ceremony.
Savannah Guthrie asked Jenna if her dad was planning to hand over a case of Altoids to Obama. Jenna responded, “Yeah, he’s ordered a case of Altoids, and he’ll be bringing that to Mrs. Obama.” She also clarified that her father isn’t gifting the Altoids because she really needs it.
In an old interview with TODAY, Bush detailed the 2018 moment, recalling exactly what happened at the funeral. He stated that he got a little “antsy” as he was seated next to Obama, as he always does, later teasing her and offering her an Altoid.
He mentioned that he didn’t give it to her as a joke but believed that she needed it in that particular moment. When he later hopped into the car, he revealed that his daughter revealed that he was trending for the altoids moment. However, he wasn’t aware of what trending meant.
“It turns out the country is starved to see a White, center-right Republican and an African-American center-left Democrat having fun, and being able to converse, not as political figures, but as citizens,” he continued, referring to how the world perceives his friendship with the former First Lady.
