UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned from his position on June 22, shortly after US President Donald Trump criticized his leadership and claimed he had failed on key issues.
Starmer is the sixth prime minister in a decade, in a period of turmoil for UK politics after the country decided to exit the EU.
Donald Trump criticized Keir Starmer and said he had “failed badly” before the UK prime minister announced his resignation
Trump took to Truth Social to declare, “Keir Starmer will resign,” adding that, “He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!”
Starmer appeared in front of the 10 Downing Street residence to address a gathering.
Starmer went on to list his milestones in the leadership role, such as “restoring trust in the economy, defense and national security.” He, however, maintained that he respects the party’s decision on who they want in the position of leadership in the coming years. “I am putting the country I love first. I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he said.
Starmer became prime minister less than two years ago, in July 2024, with a landslide victory. However, his position came under pressure after Andy Burnham’s victory in a special election, which strengthened calls for a leadership change. With more than 100 MPs reported to be favoring Burnham over Starmer, the Prime Minister was left staring down the barrel as far as his leadership position was concerned.
During his address, Starmer praised his “fantastic wife” and spoke about wanting to be the “best dad that I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and joy.”
Starmer confirmed his decision after speaking with King Charles, who has now seen three prime ministers during his reign.
WHAT DOES STARMER’S RESIGNATION SIGNAL ABOUT THE STATE OF U.K. POLITICS?
