Donald Trump’s New Airport Name Comes With More Than New Signs

Palm Beach Airport’s new name just created an unexpected legal battle. The upcoming renaming of a major Florida airport in Donald Trump’s name involves a trademark twist beyond simple rebranding.

Palm Beach airport to become DJT this July

Palm Beach International Airport in Florida will officially become President Donald J. Trump International Airport next month. USA Today reported the change follows a Florida law passed in March that mandates the renaming. The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to grant final approval on July 9, 2026.

The airport’s operator confirmed the move through an FAQ posted on its website. The transition will unfold in phases even after the official date takes effect. “Although the required name change will become effective July 9, 2026, transition activities, including updates to signage, branding, and public-facing materials, will occur in phases,” the FAQ states.

Meanwhile, the airport’s IATA code will shift from PBI to DJT on Aug. 18. Passengers will need to use DJT when searching for the airport in airline reservations after that date. “The new IATA code will be reflected in airline reservation systems, ticketing, baggage tags, and related industry platforms once the change takes effect,” the FAQ adds. The FAA and International Civil Aviation Organization will also update their identifier codes accordingly.

The renaming has drawn some controversy since the law was first passed. President Trump moved to trademark the phrase Donald J. Trump International Airport and the DJT code shortly after. Palm Beach County then had to enter a licensing agreement to use the legally required new name.

The airport acknowledged the mixed reception in its FAQ. “While we recognize that the required name change may be received in different ways by our passengers, we’re grateful for your continued support through this transition period,” it states. Airport operations and services will continue without interruption throughout the process.
