Albanians have been protesting since the start of June against a proposed luxury resort along the country’s Adriatic coast. The project is linked to the family of American President Donald Trump. The two key people involved in this real estate project are Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner.

The protests kicked off back in the early days of June. The Guardian noted back on June 4, 2026, that “thousands took to the streets of Tirana for a third straight day.”

Aleksandr Trajce, executive director of the country’s leading conservation group, the Protection and Preservation of the Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA), had said back then, “From start to finish, there has been a total lack of transparency. We have seen no public consultation or public documentation regarding permits, and so now what we are saying is, if they remove the bulldozers, remove the fence, and restore the habitats to what they were, then we can start talking.”

The movement, still continuing, has been dubbed the Flamingo Revolution. The flamingo, one of the species that inhabits the Vjosa–Narta wetland ecosystem, has become a symbol of the protest.

The protests have reached a point where the protestors are calling for the president’s resignation. Several rallies in solidarity with Albanians have since taken place across Europe, North America, and Australia.

Prime Minister Rama has firmly stated that the luxury investment projects will go ahead despite the protests. Hence, things remain in the air at the moment.
