Angelina Jolie, who shares six kids with ex Brad Pitt, shared that her daughters are helping her rediscover her “old self.” The Academy Award winner has returned to the big screen with her latest film, Couture. It follows Maxine Walker, a filmmaker who receives a breast cancer diagnosis while working in Paris during Fashion Week.
Angelina Jolie’s daughters are helping her rediscover ‘old self’ beyond being just a ‘mom’
Angelina Jolie and her ex Brad Pitt share sons Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, and Knox, 17, and daughters Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and Vivienne, 17. While speaking of her daughters in an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Jolie said, “I think in some way they’re bringing me back to my old self.”
“My desire for them to have all of the strength and openness and softness and faith and ferocity is reminding me. I think they kind of want me now to not just be ‘Mom.’ There’s a different room for me to be that woman again, that’s not just a mom,” she added.
Directed by Alice Winocour, Couture shows Maxine not only facing the reality of her cancer diagnosis but also examining the relationships and people that have shaped her. SA, a single mother raising her daughter, Maxine’s journey touches on themes that resonate with Angelina Jolie’s own experiences.
In 2013, the actress underwent a preventative double mastectomy after learning she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation. She is also a single parent to six children, balancing the demands of motherhood with a career in the entertainment industry.
When asked whether the questions she asks herself now are different from those she asked decades ago, Jolie admitted they were. She said, “Completely, and maybe I’ve come around to being a little bit more the person I used to be. I’m discovering something now that my daughters are older. They’re talking to me as young women, and I’m seeing what I want for them. I’m seeing what I don’t want them to lose and what I want them to hold on to. And it’s kind of reminding me what I may have lost.”
Couture is running in theaters across the US.
