LeBron James to Leave Lakers After Eight Seasons

LeBron James is moving on from Los Angeles. The NBA offseason just got its biggest shake-up yet. After eight seasons and one championship with the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James is reportedly preparing for a new team. His next destination has not been decided, but his Lakers chapter is coming to an end.

Rich Paul informs Los Angeles that the 41-year-old superstar is moving on in NBA free agency

According to NBA.com, multiple reports citing Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul said LeBron James has informed the Lakers that he will play elsewhere during the 2026-27 season. ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported that James told Los Angeles the franchise “can move on without him.”

The decision ends the longest single-team stretch of James’ NBA career. He joined the Lakers in 2018 and helped deliver the franchise’s 17th championship in 2020, winning Finals MVP inside the Orlando bubble. The Lakers also issued a farewell statement through team governor Jeanie Buss. “LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history,” Buss said, adding that the organization would “always be thankful” for his eight years in purple and gold.

James is not retiring. Instead, the 41-year-old is expected to enter his record-extending 24th NBA season with another franchise. NBA.com noted that he can speak with teams after free agency opens, but he cannot officially sign until the league’s offseason moratorium lifts on July 6.

The LeBron New Team question is already taking over NBA free agency. Golden State has been mentioned as one possible landing spot, especially after Draymond Green declined his player option. Still, there is no confirmed deal with the Warriors or any other team.

James leaves behind a massive Lakers legacy. He became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer while wearing the Lakers uniform and also made history by playing alongside his son, Bronny James. For now, one thing is clear: the next chapter will not happen with the Lakers.
