Dave Portnoy, the founder and owner of the renowned sports and popular culture company Barstool Sports, has suggested that he is considering running against current NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The 49-year-old businessman, in a recent interview, berated the Working Families Party leader by insinuating that he would do much better work in office since he has had experience doing a “real job.”

During his recent conversation with Fox News host Jesse Watters, Portnoy expressed his intentions to challenge Zohran Mamdani for NYC’s mayoral seat, before referring to him as a “clown politician.”
“I would love to run against [Mamdani],” he told Watters. “If I was going to run, it would be here. Can I win here? I have no idea. I don’t know the demographics, whether I’d get enough votes. There’s a lot of people who like me in New York City.”
Portnoy continued, “I know that. I’ve done a lot of good in New York City when I wasn’t thinking about politics…so it wasn’t for show. I’ve had a real job, I’ve done real things. Unlike these clown politicians who have never had a job and never been in the real world for a day.”
Portnoy reasoned his eligibility for the role of NYC mayor over Zohran Mamdani by listing two of his past ventures. He pointed out the Barstool Fund he launched in 2020, which has since raised $41.6 million to aid small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Portnoy also highlighted his popular YouTube series, One Bite Pizza Reviews, where he, as the name suggests, recommends pizza places to people.
Portnoy concluded by criticizing the people who voted for the Democratic leader. “But the people voting…are like these young, white, Ivy League-ish, elite-ish, women – like, who are they? Like they’ll never vote for me. They’ll never believe in common sense,” he said.
