CNN’s chief data analyst recently gave a warning about Donald Trump’s influence on the upcoming midterm elections. Harry Enten has said that the significant decline in the president’s approval rating across key states could threaten Republican control of the Senate.
Harry Enten has a warning for Donald Trump amid approval rating
CNN’s Harry Enten presented polling data showing Donald Trump’s approval rating has cratered in six states critical to the Senate map. Democrats need to flip four seats to reclaim the upper chamber, and the analyst suggested the backlash against the president makes that goal increasingly achievable.
Trump carried those states comfortably last cycle, winning most by double-digit margins and posting an average net approval of plus eight points. However, that advantage has now seemingly evaporated.
Harry Enten now calculates Donald Trump’s average net approval rating across the same six states at minus 11 points. “A nearly 20-point switcheroo in the negative direction,” he said, adding, “Down, down he goes into the Ohio River” (via The Daily Beast).
Maine shows the deepest hole at minus 21 points. North Carolina follows at minus 14. Iowa and Ohio each register minus 10, while Texas sits at minus 9. Even Alaska, typically a reliably Republican state, has flipped negative at minus 1 point.
The driving force behind the slump, according to the CNN analyst, is voter frustration over the cost of living. On that specific issue, the numbers worsen considerably. Trump’s net approval on handling the cost-of-living crisis registers at minus 22 in Alaska, minus 21 in Texas, minus 24 in Iowa, minus 26 in Ohio, minus 29 in North Carolina, and minus 36 in Maine.
Ultimately, Enten framed the president as an electoral liability dragging down the party’s chances. “Donald John Trump is an anchor dragging down these Republican candidates across the board,” he warned.
