FBI Director Kash Patel is facing criticism for a post on X about Senator Lindsey Graham’s reported death. Many critics described the message as “reckless,” sparking controversy and conspiracy theories online.
Kash Patel’s comments about Lindsey Graham fueled criticism across social media and political circles
Graham, who was first elected to the Senate in 2002 and was a close political ally of President Donald Trump, died at 71 on July 11. The BBC reported that Graham’s spokesperson said preliminary medical examiner findings suggested his death was caused by an aortic rupture, a major artery in the heart.
Following the news, Patel paid tribute to Graham in a post on X, describing him as a devoted public servant, a strong defender of the nation, and a patriot who dedicated his life to serving the people of South Carolina and the United States. Patel also offered condolences to Graham’s family, loved ones, and colleagues, adding that the FBI was “assisting local authorities and has made every necessary resource available.”
Patel’s post quickly raised concerns after he said the FBI was “assisting local authorities” with the matter. While some called for more details following Graham’s death, others shared their own conspiracy theories online.
While one of many bashed him, saying, “What in God’s name was the purpose of adding that last part to the end of this tweet?” One more said, “The FBI doesn’t investigate a death by natural causes. If it were a cardiac arrest, many things can lead to cardiac arrest other than natural causes. Interesting last line by Kash, regardless.” Another wrote, “Maybe he had heart issues. Maybe he had an aneurysm. Maybe he had a legitimate health issue. But to return from Ukraine and die immediately, I do not believe in coincidence.”
The Bulwark’s Sam Stein criticized the post, calling the ending of the tweet “genuinely reckless.” Conspiracy theories also emerged online alleging that Graham’s death was linked to Russia or Iran following his recent trip to Ukraine. An individual tweeted, “Did Russia just poison Lindsey Graham? There seriously needs to be an investigation,” adding, “Graham was in Ukraine one day ago calling for a Russian sanctions bill that he claimed the White House supports. Now he is suddenly dead from a random illness, according to his staff.”
This is not the first time the FBI director has come under fire. Patel, who joined as the ninth director on February 21, 2025, has also faced criticism for mismanagement and misconduct. In November 2025, as per Yahoo News, the 46-year-old was accused of misusing agency resources, including assigning protection to his girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins.
