The relationship between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton could reportedly become even more strained once the Princess of Wales becomes Queen, according to a report by Sky News. Royal expert Jennie Bond explained that curtsying is a long-standing royal tradition. She noted that there will come a time when Middleton becomes Queen and Markle would be expected to curtsy to her. This is a gesture Bond claims the Duchess of Sussex finds “comically absurd.”
This refers to Markle’s recollection of meeting the late Queen Elizabeth II for the first time. In the 2022 docuseries “Harry & Meghan,” the former “Suits” actor admitted that she thought Harry was joking when he told her she would have to curtsy to the Queen.
She recalled, “I didn’t know I was going to meet her until moments before. We were in the car, and we were going to Royal Lodge for lunch, and [Harry] was like, ‘Oh, my grandmother is here, she’s gonna be there after church.'” Markle added that when Harry asked if she knew how to curtsy, she initially thought he was joking.
The Duchess of Sussex and the Princess of Wales have reportedly remained on strained terms. They have hardly spoken to one another. The last time they were seen together was in September 2022, when they attended events surrounding Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
Bond believes their relationship could become even more complicated once Middleton becomes Queen. She said, “I think a key problem in any relationship between them is the power balance. Catherine is a future queen—she will always take priority over Meghan.”
