Reid addressed the situation during the Chiefs’ July 27 training camp press conference in St. Joseph, Missouri. “Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,” Reid said before confirming, “Mia is stable, which is a plus.”
The update provided some relief after Mia suffered serious injuries in a shooting at the family’s home in Ashburn, Virginia. Reid praised Mia while emphasizing that Eric has the organization’s full support. “She’s a saint,” he said, adding that time would play a role in the family’s healing.
Reid did not give a timetable for the offensive coordinator’s return. He said Bieniemy had a strong support system and should focus on what was happening away from camp. In his absence, pass game coordinator Joe and offensive line coach Andy Heck will oversee offensive duties, according to The Associated Press.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the 20000 block of Northpark Drive at approximately 7:32 p.m. July 26. They found an adult woman with multiple gunshot wounds and transported her to a hospital with serious injuries.
Authorities arrested Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, in connection with the shooting. He faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He remains held without bond. The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active and authorities do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.
The family crisis interrupted what had been an important return for NFL coach Eric Bieniemy. He rejoined Kansas City as offensive coordinator this year after working with the Washington Commanders, UCLA and Chicago Bears. Travis Kelce had cited Bieniemy’s return while discussing his own Chiefs future.
