Kate Middleton’s maternal uncle, Gary Goldsmith, shared that he underwent an emergency procedure in April 2025. He disclosed that doctors performed the surgery to treat enlarged veins in his oesophagus, which were believed to be related to liver disease.

Talking to Daily Mail, Goldsmith praised Kate’s strength after she completed the National Three Peaks Challenge during her cancer recovery. After receiving a cancer diagnosis in early 2024, the challenge saw her climb three of the U.K.’s highest mountains within 24 hours.
He said Kate’s approach to her diagnosis and treatment has inspired him. He added that the achievement reminded him of her childhood trips to the Lake District. The uncle said, “You put on your walking boots and off you go. For Kate, it felt like a return to nature, a return to her childhood.”
The 61-year-old, who took part in Celebrity Big Brother U.K. in 2024, said he changed his lifestyle after giving up alcohol and using Mounjaro, which helped him lose about 85 pounds. He told the outlet that he later paused the medication and enjoyed some treats, including seafood and cake, during his 60th birthday celebration in Ibiza.
Goldsmith recalled feeling very ill at his villa eight days after his birthday. He began vomiting blood and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors performed the surgery. He told the Daily Mail that surgeons performed the procedure by placing bands around the affected veins. He said, “If they hadn’t banded me, I would have bled to death.” He spent the following 48 hours recovering in the ICU.
The health crisis occurred only months after Kate shared that she was in remission from cancer. Goldsmith said he was grateful that the Middleton family supported him despite the difficult time they were experiencing. He acknowledged that while his illness was difficult, Kate’s cancer diagnosis was a far more significant challenge for the family. According to Today, Kate completed chemotherapy in September 2024 and shared that she was “cancer-free.” She announced her remission in January 2025.
