Page Six learned that Katie Holmes is reportedly fully behind Suri’s decision to no longer use Tom Cruise’s last name. An insider claimed the “Dawson’s Creek” actress respected her daughter’s decision from the beginning and believed it was something only Suri could decide.
“Katie wasn’t surprised by Suri’s decision,” the source told the outlet. The insider alleged that Suri has always been “incredibly independent” and “confident” enough to make important life choices on her own.
At the same time, the source claimed the alleged name change did not happen overnight. It was apparently a decision that developed gradually. Throughout that process, Holmes reportedly chose to support her daughter rather than guide her toward a particular outcome.
The report also suggests Holmes has always wanted Suri to “think for herself.” The source alleged the 47-year-old spent years raising her daughter to be independent and make her own decisions. As a result, Holmes is said to be “incredibly proud” of the “confident, independent young woman” Suri has become.
More importantly, the insider claimed Holmes’ priority has remained the same. According to the source, she reportedly simply wants her daughter “to be happy and live life on her own terms.” That, the insider claimed, matters more than anything else to the actress.
The claims come shortly after the publication reported that Suri had legally changed her name to Suri Noelle, taking Holmes’ middle name as her surname. What’s more, public voter registration records in Pennsylvania reportedly reflect the updated name.
Holmes and the “Top Gun” star welcomed Suri in 2006 before ending their marriage in 2012. Since then, Holmes has largely raised her daughter in New York. Meanwhile, reports have long suggested that Cruise and Suri have remained estranged.
