Brittney Griner and Cherelle Griner are going their separate ways after eight years of marriage. The WNBA star has filed for divorce from Cherelle, stating that their marriage is “irretrievably broken.” The divorce filing revealed that the couple, who married in 2019, officially separated on July 24. They share a two-year-old son named Bash.

According to DailyMail, Griner is requesting joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s two-year-old son. She is also seeking an equal division of their marital assets. The filing states she “should be awarded her separate, nonmarital property, including but not limited to inherited property as well as premarital property.”
Griner and Cherelle’s relationship began at Baylor University, where they met as students before marrying in June 2019. During her time there, Brittney helped the Bears to win the 2012 NCAA national championship after a perfect 40–0 season, reports the New York Post.
Cherelle, an attorney, supported Brittney after the WNBA star was detained at a Moscow airport in Russia in February 2022. Griner was imprisoned after authorities found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her bag, as per People.
Russian officials charged Brittney with illegally bringing “narcotic drugs” into the country. A court sentenced her to nine years in prison. She was released from Russian custody in December 2022, four months after her sentencing. Before her relationship with Cherelle, Griner was married to former WNBA player Glory Johnson. The couple’s marriage ended after just a few weeks, with Griner filing for an annulment in 2015.
Earlier this year, Griner shared how Cherelle stood by her during her imprisonment. She told WHYY that she even wrote a letter telling her wife she could move on if needed: “I was still at the detention center when I wrote this one. It was a hard letter to write. It’s just like that’s a long time. It’s already a long time for someone to do it in the States, but you can visit them occasionally. You could never visit me [in Russia]. I wanted her to promise me that she’d still be my friend, that she’d still write to me.”
